A Fuji-area family getaway from Tokyo | the short answer

Short answer: Mishima (Shizuoka), about an hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen, pairs the deer garden at Mishima Taisha with clear-stream play at the Genbe River — an easy day out with kids. Extend the trip to Yamanashi for peach picking, and the Fuji area works for a day trip or an overnight where kids can run free.

Three things to know:

• Mishima (Shizuoka): deer at Mishima Taisha + stream play at the Genbe River. ~1 hour from Tokyo on the Kodama Shinkansen
• Yamanashi: peach picking from June to August (some orchards are free for preschoolers)

Mishima Taisha & the deer garden | meet the deer

Walking from Mishima Station past Shirataki Park and along the Sakura River, you reach the great torii of Mishima Taisha. The family favorite is the Shinrokuen deer garden in the grounds.

• Deer garden: you can feed the deer through a fence. They’re said to descend from deer given by Kasuga Taisha in Nara
• Access: walkable from Mishima Station. By car, parking is ¥200 per hour for a small car (¥300 from April 2026)
• Kid note: the approach is wide and stroller-friendly

Stream play at the Genbe River | the “City of Water”

Mishima is known as the “City of Water,” with Fuji’s spring water flowing throughout — most famously along the Genbe River.

• Access: about 5 minutes on foot from Mishima Station. Stepping stones and boardwalks let you stroll right by the water
• Stream play: from early summer, kids can wade in. The spring water stays 15–16°C year-round, so even dipping your feet is refreshing in summer
• Kid note: there are steps down to the water in many spots, and fireflies appear in early summer

⚠️ Stream play can be dangerous depending on weather and water levels. Don’t enter when the water is high, and never take your eyes off your child.

Peach picking in Yamanashi | June–August

The other Fuji-area treat is peach picking in Yamanashi. (It’s in a different direction from Mishima — Yamanashi is toward the Chuo Line — so pair it as a separate day or an overnight.)

• Season: late June to August at its peak (some orchards run into early September). Fuefuki City is a noted growing area
• All-you-can-eat: many orchards let you pick and eat freshly ripened peaches. Some are free for preschoolers, and prices vary by orchard (e.g., from ~¥1,400 adults, ~¥900 for elementary)
• Kid note: the sun is strong in season — bring hats and water

Local food | Mishima eel (unagi)

As a city of spring water, Mishima is also known for unagi (eel) — the water was once clean enough to purge Hamana Lake eels of their muddiness, and there are many good eel restaurants.
